Raw Simrad EM3002 dual-head multibeam bathymetry data provided in .all format. Data corrected for position, vessel attitude, water-column sound-speed and refraction.
Purpose:
The Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) and the Tidal Energy Device Evaluation Center (TEDEC) are developing a tidal energy project in Castine harbor and the Bagaduce River. This area has a great potential as a renewable energy source due to the high tidal range, strong currents, and narrow cross-section. A bathymetric survey of Castine harbor and the Bagaduce River was conducted by students of the 2008 Summer Hydrographic Field Course at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping / Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC). MMA and TEDEC specified two areas of primary interest for the tidal energy project: Castine harbor and the narrows of the Bagaduce River. A secondary area was also identified due to its environmental importance within the proposed development of a renewable energy site (Trott Ledge area).

A Kongsberg Simrad EM3002D 300-kHz multibeam dual heads sonar was used with effective beam opening angle of 10-57 degrees for each transducer head resulting in a swath width ~3 times water depth in water depths between 4 and 25 m, with depth accuracies still to be determined.

Horizontal positioning of the vessel was determined using an Applanix Position and Orientation System for Marine Vessels (POS/MV) V4 combined with an Applanix Inertial Motion Unit (IMU-200). The horizontal positions from POS/MV were controlled using Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) correctors. Positioning is accurate to better than 0.05 meters (at 95% confidence) during surveying. All positioning is referenced to the WGS84 Datum.

Survey meets IHO Special Order depth accuracy specifications for all areas with the exception of the narrows of the Bagaduce River, which met IHO Order 1 specifications.

The bathymetry data were collected and processed by the 2008 Summer Hydrographic Field Course. The data were cleaned and processed in using CARIS HIPS and SIPS (v. 6.1). Tide correctors were provided by an Aanderaa tide guage installed at Castine harbor. Sound speed correctors were obtained using an Odom Digibar Pro sound velocimeter, deployed at least once every 4 hours (frequency of casts dependent on environmental conditions at the transducer face as recorded by the surface sound velocimeter mounted between the transducer heads).
